Keep your local computer tidy

Two small routines keep your desktop and downloads easy to scan. Creaiter never accesses your files: you grant Codex one folder at a time, review its plan, and decide on every change yourself.

From file clutter to two clear inboxes

Codex helps with the inventory and sorting plan. You keep every decision, and each routine starts from a fresh checklist.

Routines

Two routines, one clean start

Open only the folder you are reviewing. Copy the inspect-first prompt, review Codex's plan, and then check off your manual verification steps.

Daily2 min

Keep the desktop clear

Trigger
At the end of the workday or when loose files would slow down the next start.
Target state
No unchecked file remains loose on the desktop.

Inspect-first prompt for Codex

Work only inside the currently shared Desktop folder and start in read-only mode.

1. List only visible items at the top level. Do not open subfolders.
2. Skip hidden files, links, system items, and files that may be open, uploading, or syncing.
3. Create a table with: item, suggestion (keep / move / review later), proposed destination, and reason.
4. Make no change yet. Stop after the plan and wait for my explicit approval for each individual item.

Even after approval: never use rm, permanently delete anything, automatically move anything to trash, or act outside explicitly shared folders. Leave unclear items unchanged.

Manual checklist

0/5 steps completed

Done when

No unchecked file remains loose on the desktop, and nothing was deleted unseen or permanently.

Weekly8 min

Keep Downloads tidy

Trigger
On Fridays or when important files become hard to find among new downloads.
Target state
Every remaining download has an intentional next action.

Inspect-first prompt for Codex

Work only inside the currently shared Downloads folder and start in read-only mode.

1. List only visible top-level items with name, type, size, and modified date. Do not open subfolders.
2. Skip hidden files, links, system items, incomplete downloads, and files that are currently used or syncing.
3. Group the rest as documents, media, archives, installers, possible duplicates, and unclear. Treat similar names only as a review hint.
4. Create a sorting plan with proposed destinations and reasons. Make no change yet and wait for my explicit approval for each individual item.

Even after approval: never use rm, permanently delete anything, automatically empty trash, or act outside explicitly shared folders. Leave unclear items unchanged.

Manual checklist

0/6 steps completed

Done when

Downloads contains only active downloads or files with an intentionally chosen next step.

Final review

  • Desktop and Downloads were reviewed separately and only at the top level.
  • Every move was understandable and explicitly approved one by one.
  • Unknown, syncing, or incomplete files remained unchanged.
  • Trash, cloud sync, and important backups were deliberately checked.
